Dentures Q&A
What are dentures?
Dentures are artificial teeth that can restore your smile if you have missing or severely damaged teeth. Partial dentures replace just some of your natural teeth, while complete upper and lower dentures can replace all of your teeth.
Implant-supported dentures are secured in place by titanium posts, or artificial tooth roots placed within your jawbone. Dr. Kraft and his team complete dentures treatment, including extraction, when necessary, right in their office.
Am I a good candidate for dentures?
To find out if dentures are right for you, the Payson Dental and Orthodontics team reviews your medical history and examines your mouth. They take dental X-rays to let you know which type of dentures best match your unique needs.
How can I prepare for dentures?
The first step in the process of getting dentures might be tooth extraction if you have severely decayed or loose permanent teeth. After you heal from extraction, Dr. Kraft can design custom removable dentures or surgically place metal implants within your jawbone to support fixed permanent dentures.
If you don’t have enough bone to support dentures but prefer implant-supported dentures over removable dentures, you may be a candidate for bone grafting to strengthen your jaw prior to dental implant placement.
How are dentures made?
The Payson Dental and Orthodontics team takes digital scans of your mouth after extraction, bone grafting if necessary, for dental implant placement so a dental lab can develop custom-fit dentures.
Once your dentures are ready, Dr. Kraft makes sure they fit properly on your gums or firmly attach to dental implants. With implant-supported dentures, you don’t have to worry about taking your teeth out to eat or removing them at night.
How should I care for my dentures?
Your denture care instructions are based on the type of dentures you receive. If you have removable dentures, brush them daily and soak them in a special solution at night. If you have implant-supported dentures, brush your teeth at least twice daily and floss every day.
See Dr. Kraft and his team if your dentures become damaged, and every six months for dental cleanings and exams. Avoid chewing on popcorn kernels, ice, and other hard objects.
Don’t let missing teeth ruin your self-confidence or impede your ability to chew and speak properly. Schedule a dentures consultation with Payson Dental and Orthodontics over the phone or online today.
